Gaby Pacheco of TheDream.US Reacts to 5th Circuit DACA Ruling

Gaby Pacheco: “While the 5th Circuit ruling allows current DACA recipients to continue to renew their DACA status, it does not change the fundamental reality: Dreamers and the nation need to replace the ongoing legal limbo and uncertainty with a permanent legislative solution.”

Washington, DC – The following is a statement from Gaby Pacheco, TheDream.US Director of Advocacy, Development, and Communications, reacting to today’s 5th Circuit ruling on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:

“After today’s 5th Circuit DACA decision, TheDream.US calls on Congress to pass bipartisan legislation that provides permanent protections for undocumented immigrant youth.

While the 5th Circuit ruling allows current DACA recipients to continue to renew their DACA status, it does not change the fundamental reality: Dreamers and the nation need to replace the ongoing legal limbo and uncertainty with a permanent legislative solution. The DACA program was always meant to be temporary and a stepping stone for Congress to legislate a permanent solution. It has been ten years since DACA was put in place. The solution is clear, we need bipartisan legislation that provides a path to green cards and eventual citizenship for all our Dreamers.

To our TheDream.US Scholars and directly affected families: you are not alone. In this time of uncertainty, we want you to know that we are with you and using our voice to ask Congress to provide a path to permanent status for all of you – Dreamers with or without DACA.”

Additional Background

  • There are more than 3,000 TheDream.US college graduates across the nation. Our alumni rely on the opportunities made possible by DACA to work as nurses, teachers, research scientists, business entrepreneurs, social justice workers, and more – all contributing to this country’s strength.
  • See reminders of why DACA has been so transformative and why opportunities for Dreamers strengthen the nation via the powerful first-person testimonials of DACA recipients shared on the 10-year anniversary of DACA’s announcement and implementation.
